4 Be able to mix multitrack recordings
Volume: eg balancing levels, fadeout, automation, headroom, output level
Pan/balance: eg using the stereo field, phase issues, idiomatic treatment
Dynamic control: eg noise gates, compressors, side chains, limiters, expanders; dynamic range
Equalisation: creative EQ; remedial EQ
Effects: connection eg inserts, sends; type eg time domain effects, dynamic processors; specific effects eg reverb, delay, chorus, flanger; distortion effects eg guitar amp simulation, overdrive, bitcrusher; ambient control
Editing: eg comping, top and tail edits, trimming, normalising, fades
Bouncing down: eg file types, real-time, off-line, start and end points.

Headroom
We kept an eye on the headroom by watching the levels on the channels, if it peaked it would go red. How we stopped it from peaking was by turning the gain down on the individual channels. Below is a diagram:

Equalisation
Eq 1 is a low shelf. Otherwise known as a high pass filter because it allows high frequencies through and cuts low frequencies.
Eq 2 is a low mid parametric. This allows boosting or cutting a range of low mid frequencies.
The cue function allows you to widen or narrow the band.
Eq 3 is a high mid function is the same.
Eq 4 is a high shelf; it’s a low pass filter. It allows the low frequencies through and filters out the high frequencies.
Creative EQ
I experimented with using the EQ so I could then get used to what sounded good and what didn't sound so good. It's something you need to be really careful with and really use your ears well so you can recognise the difference between what sounds good and what doesn't.
I noticed that if you have the EQ up too high then it distorts the sound.
To the left is a print screen of an example of when I put the EQ up too high and it distorted the sound of Charlies vocals.
I had to EQ each section by soloing each person so I could then put them together to see if they clashed or if they worked.
On some of my vocals where you can hear the plosive's I had to lower the frequencies at the bottom so it cut them out.
Remedial EQ
Effects
Connection eg inserts
Sends; type eg time domain effects
Dynamic processors
Specific effects eg reverb
I put on reverb on some of the singing, especially on the backing singing that I do as I didn't want it to be too obvious so adding reverb gave it more of an atmosphere.

Write- put in what you want it to do
Read- plays it back
you can do it manually by getting the pencil
you can do it manually by getting the pencil
Making parts louder and quieter by getting the pencil and changing the volume of certain sections
I put a loop on so I could work on specific sections and
this made it easier for me to see what I was doing and could concentrate on
getting each section fitting well with one another. For example this part where
Charlie Mo and I sing ‘ Rosa’ in harmony I wanted it to be a bit louder when it
came in so that when Archie sings over it then I can make it quieter again so
it sounds as if it’s in the background.
